Creating the Right Heroine for your Story

Every great story has a great heroine or hero. The process of developing the right heroine for your story can be challenging when you think of their pivotal role in the book. Here are some tips to consider if you want to develop a relatable main character.

Give the character some doubt

When the heroine thinks of their call and what lies ahead of them, they should at least feel some level of doubt to make them appear more human. For a character to be considered a hero, they must face obstacles before achieving their final mission. The obstacles must be daunting enough to justify their title and some level of reluctance at the beginning will add spice to the story.

Include some romance

Just because your heroine is focused on their mission does not mean there should be no romance involved. The relationship should, however, not take center stage. The heroine should remain independent and in the end, they should be able to achieve their mission despite a few distractions. Their love interest can be against or supportive of their goal but in the end, their opinion and deeds should only affect the heroine to a certain extent.

Does your heroine have a sense of humor?

They may be involved in a life and death struggle but a few humorous conversations and remarks should be able to break the tension if only for a while. Humor creates moments for pausing and understanding the characters better. These comical points in the storyline are important when creating action scenes that are unexpected. A heroine may be having a casual dialogue with other characters when suddenly something or someone appears or captures their attention.

Give the character amazing strengths too

Despite their weaknesses, the main character should have admirable strengths that will attract readers. It could be only one trait or a set of traits. While their physical appearance could be their greatest asset, it should not be their only strength. No one considers anyone a heroine just by their looks. Their imperfections should balance out their strengths. They could be bold and kind but sometimes sassy or they could be doubtful in their abilities even when others believe in them but as the story continues, their confidence grows.

Frightening enemies and great friends

The heroine should have powerful enemies but equally loyal friends, even if it is just a single person on their side. The friendship could be an unlikely one which could add interest to the story. In Mother Trees by G.G. Grit, the heroine is a girl who is friends with a much older woman with grandchildren. They come from different backgrounds and Berti’s friend is rough on the surface but as Berti gets to know her, she begins to appreciate the woman’s kindness and determination.

Heroes and heroines are ordinary people who choose to do what everyone else is afraid of and who achieve extraordinary results. They inspire in many ways. Even when they are fearful, they choose to do the right thing or answer their calling.
