Hallmarks for a Successful Plot that Snags the Attention of Readers

Writing a successful plot is not easy, even for the most seasoned writer. There comes a time when even the most experienced authors struggle at writing a plot that is perfect in every aspect. To be able to write a plot that appeals to readers and publishers alike, you need to ensure that you are satisfied with it. If the writer is not happy with the plot and the direction it is taking, the chances of anyone else liking the plot are very slim.

There are certain hallmarks of a good plot that is commercially successful and critically acclaimed. Keep these trademarks in your mind while you are writing and structuring the plot as it will not only help you with making it exceptional but also help in marketing the story in the future.

Here is everything that you need to keep in mind to make your plot stand out right from the moment you start structuring it.

While you are structuring your plot, make sure where you are going to create curiosity in the plot. The plot is only going to be interesting for readers if you raise questions in their minds.

Although asking questions is great, you need to make sure that you answer these questions on time. Dragging it out too long can cause your reader to lose interest in the story and even stop reading the novel.

There should be cohesion in your plot. The different parts of the story should relate to each other, they should follow the same timeline and the same themes and motives. If different parts of your story don’t connect or make sense, it will reflect badly on your story and your characters.

Make sure that the instances and the situations you create have logic. This is exceptionally important if you have written a fantasy novel with its own universe and culture. If a certain character has any sort of power (supernatural or political), there should be a reason behind it and it should be valid.

Try to avoid adding clichéd situations in your novel as much as possible. Clichéd situations and reasons are boring, the reader already knows what will happen next, which inadvertently leads to them losing interest. Using common tropes can be very helpful if you are running out of ideas, but you must create surprises, come up with something original and make it a part of your story.

Last, but not least, you need to give something worth their time and attention. The reader will be taking some time out of their lives to read your stories, so you need to make it worth their while. Give your readers entertainment, something they crave, give them adventure or give them something to connect with. These are the things that readers are looking for when they purchase a book.

Some readers want to transport to a new world, live a fantasy and some readers just want a place to get lost in for a few hours. If your plot is strong enough, they will get this and so much more. In return, you will gain a loyal reader and great sales.
