Liz Reeder's 51: The Beginning takes the reader on a journey into the happenings of a small county near a military base in the Missouri Ozarks. Former Deputy Sheriff Lindsey Gold encountered a strange occurrence on a call and reported it. Told to change the report, she refused and was subsequently fired. Some time later, two members of the county commission show up at her door. It seems the previous sheriff had quit without notice, and they want her for the job. After Lindsey accepts, things really begin to happen. Her department begins receiving calls regarding strange creatures and paranormal activities, a lot of calls, each one a little more bizarre than the last. Wren Gold, her husband, is a federal agent working on the base, but has never told her what his job really involves. Could it be something to do with these activities? Now the couple must work together in order to manage and/or get to the bottom of the strange events of the county, if they can.

First of all, I really liked this story and read it through in one afternoon. The author has developed a very strong cast of characters in the sheriff’s office, from a dominatrix dispatcher with exceptional skills to a highly intelligent and thoroughly trained deputy who can’t talk to women. There are a lot of little things that keep the reader’s attention as the incidents become more and more bizarre. The story is clean and the dialogue is good. It is apparent that the author will be writing sequels. One small point, the ending of the story leaves the reader wanting more, but is possibly a little too abrupt. However, this an enjoyable sci-fi story.
