A Big-Bear Birthday, Please! is a children’s picture book, written and illustrated by Ingrid Sawubona. A young boy asks if he can have a bear for his birthday. While some children want pets such as a cat, a dog or even a frog, the boy has his heart set on being gifted a bear which he can study, play with, sing to, clean, go fishing, skating and sledding with. After he lists all the wonderful reasons he can possibly think of as to why it would be ideal for him to have a bear for his birthday, he then breaks the news that he’d seen a sad and lonely bear in the forest and decided to invite it to his upcoming birthday party.

Ingrid Sawubona’s absolutely enchanting and delightful tale about a little boy’s birthday wish is so beautifully written and illustrated. His pleas are heartfelt and he shows that he has given the matter much thought. He will do anything to convince his parents to say yes. The activities that the boy gives to his parents as examples made me smile, as each one gives the young reader ideas on how they could productively spend their day during their precious childhood. Each of the bright and colorful pictures gave me a warm feeling inside and I found myself smiling at such innocence and earnestness being expressed in the words of a young child. A Big-Bear Birthday, Please! is well-written and I enjoyed each and every page. I wholeheartedly recommend A Big-Bear Birthday, Please! as the ideal gift to young readers aged 7-12 years so that they too can use their imaginations to determine what their most wonderful birthday surprise ever could possibly be.
