A Different Light: The Vietnam War From A Woman's Point of View by Jennifer Thomas is based on the author's personal experiences during the Vietnam War. The book introduces readers to the concepts of war, military and civilian life, the Red Cross, and the Vietnamese culture. Jennifer views a heartbreaking commercial on the television, portraying the orphanages in Vietnam. This inspires her to take personal responsibility. Jennifer then enlists as a volunteer with the Red Cross to assist soldiers overseas for a 1-year tour. Naive and ignorant to begin with, she soon learns and experiences the truth. Jennifer records her eyewitness accounts and experiences in a day journal and in letters sent home to family and friends.

Readers often know about military events experienced by American and Vietnamese soldiers during this war, but not of civilian life, both American and Vietnamese. A Different Light: The Vietnam War from a Woman's Point of View is a unique account of documented, first person experiences with the Red Cross during a time of war. The author has written with wonderful insight on civilian life and her experiences in a country unknown to most. Jennifer Thomas provides readers with a more personal look into the Vietnamese life which includes much of their culture, lifestyle, habits, environment, mannerisms, and society in general; as well as the Red Cross involvement with not only American military members but also Vietnamese civilians. A great read for any reader interested in Vietnamese culture and the Vietnam War.
