A Greater Sound By Far by Skylar Hamilton Burris is a collection of thematic poems. The poet has experimented with different forms, making it an interesting, diverse collection. The mixing of traditional forms like ballads, sonnets, haiku, and ottava rima with free verse and contemporary style makes the collection accessible to a variety of poetry lovers. There is a poem for everybody in this book.

One thing I enjoyed in this collection was that the poet has tried out various forms which is good. It gives each poem a refreshing feel and the reader does not know what to expect next. The themes are mostly religious, thought provoking, and profound. There is a message in each poem, making it a good read. There are twelve sonnets in this book. Sonnets always fascinated me because the style is not that easy to pen. I feel any form of poetry is difficult to write because it is restrictive but it teaches a poet discipline while using the words. Free verse, as the author puts, it is more liberating, giving the writer freedom to play with words and lines.

I enjoyed the collection of ballads the most. The theme and the form are very appealing. Free verse is also exciting because it gives the poet the liberty to experiment with different formats and ways of writing. The poet gives a brief description about each form at the beginning and there are some handy tips on how to get published.
