Being different is what life is all about. But when that difference is a noticeable deformity, it’s sad to watch how others react. Sally is a puppy waiting to be adopted. The problem is Sally was born with only three paws. Her left front leg is a mere stump. She limps around and has a very happy disposition. That is, except when she gets rejected for adoption over and over again. The repetitive rejection makes Sally sad. Although the most obedient puppy in the kennel, Sally’s friends are very blunt to point out her deformity as the reason no one wants her. Until…

Stenetta Anthony’s picture book story, A Home for Sally, is a very special story for young readers. The clever plot uses a cute puppy as the main character to illustrate very effectively how important it is to accept everyone in spite of their differences, even when the differences are deformities like Sally’s. Being different, looking different isn’t a bad thing and this is an important message for readers of all ages, but particularly important to instill in young minds so that they can grow into loving, caring people, accepting other people and animals in spite of their differences.

The colorful illustrations help move the story along. There is a mini-dictionary at the end to help young readers with some of the big words, like 'deformity.' A specialist in educating the young, this author knows how to weave a story that will invite compassion for Sally, a compassion that will, hopefully, develop into a devoted caring heart for all people and animals. A treasure of a book with a powerful message.
