A Passionate Play by Jessica Lauryn is the first edition in the Rabourn Theater series, which focuses on Alicia Coleman and Nick Lancaster. A man with a gun attacks Alicia. Nick fights him but he runs away. Fearing for her safety, Nick takes the unconscious woman to a secluded house at Mohegan Lake. Alicia wakes up with amnesia. She doesn’t recognize Nick and distrusts him. Nick contacts Kay Stanton, who is a doctor. She agrees to examine Alicia and discovers that Alicia’s head injury isn’t the source of her amnesia. Mental trauma had caused the Rabourn Theater’s lead actress to lose her memory. Determined to get more answers, she questions Kay, who reveals that Nick is her boyfriend. Later that evening, while playing cards, Alicia looks out the window. She becomes terrified when she sees a large man looking directly at her.

Jessica Lauryn has a powerful capacity for creating suspense. When I thought I knew who that large man was, another twist in the plot appeared that would prove me wrong. I didn't quite understand why Nick didn’t want Alicia to regain her memory. If she could identify her attacker, that would have resolved the issue. The Mohegan Lake house was supposed to have excellent security, but I think the Lancaster family needed to reassess the situation. I know I wouldn’t want to stay there. An amazing amount of attention to minor details enhances every scene. The story is extremely unpredictable with well-developed characters. Alicia would infuriate anyone with the mind games she uses to manipulate the people around her. I recommend A Passionate Play to anyone who enjoys a mystery filled with a complicated romance between two people who are constantly at odds with each other.
