A Scheme of Sorcery is a work of highly original fantasy romance fiction penned by author Ennis Rook Bashe. The work is suitable for readers from teens upwards and features diverse themes and same-gender romance and marriage. We find ourselves in a refreshing new fantasy world where the ambitious Sariva al-Beroth is looking for marriage, increased social status, and to overcome the derision she faces from people who see her as a girl from the North. Meanwhile, palace squire Edwynne Dovecote has come to a startling realization that she too has Northern roots and tries to explore them while also keeping them secret from the nobility all around her. When these two collide, sparks fly, and conflict is inevitable, but it might just lead them to a closer understanding of one another than either had planned for.

This is the new direction in science fiction and fantasy that I’ve been anticipating for a long time. I was engrossed by this charming and original romance novel from start to finish. Sariva and Edwynne are fully formed, realistic protagonists with many relatable qualities. The sensitive narration and keen sense of dialogue make them come alive the moment they hit the page. I was absolutely fascinated by author Ennis Rook Bashe’s take on the fantasy genre and the presentation of personality dynamics, and I look forward to reading more works by this author in the future. Overall, I’d highly recommend A Scheme of Sorcery to readers who want to ease themselves into more original and diverse fantasy romances, as this is a fantastic place to start.
