Addison is not very happy at school. Even though she’s in the best class, Mrs. Washington’s class, where all kinds of fun things are always happening, Addison is not happy. Why? Because she is always alone. She has no friends. In fact, the other students are always picking on her. And that’s just because she only has one leg. Her other leg is a prosthetic. Things start to change when Greg joins her class. He’s Dr. Jenkins’ son; Dr. Jenkins is Addison’s doctor. Greg understands why Addison has a prosthetic and he reaches out to her as a friend. On Valentine’s Day, Greg has a special Valentine for all of the children in his class, but he has a special Valentine for Addison. It is the first Valentine she has ever received at school – a single red rose. It is the beginning of a special friendship, one that encourages others to reach out to Addison who really isn’t so different after all.

Kortisha Y Baker's charming children’s story, A Simple Rose, speaks from the heart and touches the reader. She has created a strong character in Addison, one who must not only endure a disability (her prosthetic leg), but also must endure the endless barrage of bullying, all because her legs are different. There is always a fear of the unknown and what the children in Addison’s class fail to do is try to learn from Addison, to understand why she has a prosthetic, and to accept her just as she is. After all, Addison is a good student, an athletic student (one who can easily outrun anyone else in the class), and she is a caring individual. All Addison needed was someone like Greg to see beyond her physical difference and notice the gem inside, the rose just waiting to bloom. A story with a powerful message for us all.
