Kelly Miller's historical novel Accusing Mr. Darcy: A Pride and Prejudice Variation is a well-crafted intriguing romance and murder mystery. Set in the Regency era, the story draws inspiration from Jane Austen. The principal characters are Elizabeth Bennet of Longbourn and Fitzwilliam Darcy of Pemberley. Elizabeth and Darcy are among the guests at the scenic Willow Ridge estate of the Kendall family. Elizabeth’s cousin Rose thinks that Elizabeth and her brother-in-law, Captain James Kendall, would make an ideal couple. Rose's husband Nicholas hopes his friend Darcy will find an ideal wife among the guests. Darcy and Elizabeth are attracted to each other, but the festive atmosphere at the Kendall estate is shattered horrifically by a murder at Westlake Manor, a neighboring estate. A guest at the Kendall estate is attacked, and fear and suspicion quickly take root. The Kendall family hires Jeremy Notley of the Bow Street Runners to inquire into the crime. Is the assailant someone at the Kendall estate?

I enjoyed reading Kelly Miller's Accusing Mr. Darcy for its exceptional characters, the tangled web of romance, and the murder mystery. I loved the evocative details of the Regency era, its intricate manners and conventions, values, and traditions that profoundly influenced a person's decisions and actions. The different characters sprang to life for me through their interaction, feelings, thinking, motives, conflicts, and personal difficulties. I liked the character development of the two principal characters, Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy, and how both experience an inner journey, struggling against feelings of love for each other. I was gripped by the story as the specter of an unknown killer haunted the gathering, affecting romance and friendships. The story's most poignant, intense, and emotional moments came as the murder investigation grew more complex and finding the killer became imperative. This is a great read, with remarkable characters and a story about love, friendship, fear, heartbreak, and courage.
