Addiction: Cold Water Immersion is a synopsis of the life experiences of author Jill Peck Vona. She suffers from an obsessive compulsive disorder as well as anorexia nervosa. Her detailed life story encapsulates her childhood years when she found out that she loved to spend time at the lake up until her adult years when her addiction to cold water manifested. She expressed that her desire to eat was preempted by the urgent need to feel cold and she completed this ritual for many years. If she didn’t immerse herself in cold water, she would desperately seek out other options to fulfill this desire. As time went on, she was able to tone down this obsession with the intervention of doctors and her beloved husband, Paul. Her faith in God in her later adult life also took away most of the fear which fed the wave of obsessions. She was therefore able to live a more normal lifestyle day by day.

Addiction: Cold Water Immersion is an in-depth look at compulsive disorder syndrome from the viewpoint of the patient and not a medical professional. Author Jill Peck Vona does not hold anything back in her rich biography. The language used is simple and quite easy to understand. I loved the fact that she included personal photos of herself and her loved ones. This serves to make the story more interesting and realistic. The average reader can also identify with the author as well as sympathize with her and her dilemma. I loved the detailed accounts of each chapter of her life. This attention to detail truly reveals how the author’s mind works before and after intervention. This story evokes hope in the reader due to the fact that the author was able to fully understand herself and, ultimately, her body. In addition, she kept a positive outlook on life despite her trials. Overall, Addiction: Cold Water Immersion is an inspirational book. I recommend it to all readers.
