Afaq: I'm Trapped in India by Timothy Reinhardt introduces us to Sid Lund who just woke up from a nightmare that was confusing, because when he wakes up he finds that real life is simply more complicated. The young American drug company executive has no memory of how he ended up in a hospital in a remote place in India. Nobody there knows him except for his fellow patient in the hospital; Afaq, who does not seem to be mentally stable. While everything is looking dark, there is one bright side - his nurse, whose name is Pretti Dey, lives up to her name and is beautiful. In a phone call that comes in anonymously, Sid is told to get out of the country because the police are after him. Without knowing why, Sid goes on the run using Afaq's crazy plan and takes Pretti along too.

The first word that comes to mind when I think about this book and reading it is utterly 'hysterical.' This book is truly a comedy of errors and, while it has serious moments, the getaway plan and what happens with it is really just a good laugh. Sid is an interesting and well fleshed out character, but I personally really connected with Afaq. I know that sounds silly because he is rather insane, but that is why I like him; the way he looks at the world is so different from anyone else in the book. I applaud Timothy Reinhardt for a truly riotous bit of fun with this book and I can't wait to read another by this talented author.

Afaq: I'm Trapped in India by Timothy Reinhardt is a quirky and funny story of Sid Lund's experiences in India. Sid is an American pharmaceutical executive who wakes up in a hospital in India with no memory. The only person who knows him is another patient, Afaq, who may or may not be literally mad. At least he has a beautiful nurse, Pretti Dey, to make his days a little less crazy, until an anonymous phone call tips Sid to the fact that the police are after him. Afaq has a harebrained plan to get Sid out of India, but it involves a hair-raising trip to Mumbai to get a fake passport and plane tickets. Pretti comes along for the ride, which makes Sid incredibly happy, but he knows things are only about to get crazier on this wild adventure to discover who he is, what he's done, and how to survive it all - including Afaq, his sidekick.

This is one of those crazy stories that almost is so unbelievable it makes it the most believable story you've ever read. It is funny, witty, and full of sharp humor that will keep readers laughing as they turn the pages. Afaq's character steals the show and is incredibly well written. The author did a fantastic job with the believability of his outrageous characters. The reader is swept into this wild, dynamic world trying to discover, along with Sid, what exactly is going on and how any of them will get out of it.

Afaq: I'm Trapped in India by Timothy Reinhardt is a hilarious, comical, and sometimes bewildering fast-paced novel set against the backdrop of India. Afaq: I'm Trapped in India begins with our introduction to Sid Lund, an American in India with no clear memory of how he landed there, and Afaq, a funny and often crazy Indian who befriends him almost against his wish. As the story unfolds, driving on the streets of India, we find out that Sid has landed in an Indian hospital with no idea of how he got there and appears to alternate between dreams and reality. Afaq attaches himself to Sid and helps him escape from the hospital because Sid is denied permission to leave. During this time, Sid meets Nurse Pretti Dey and is attracted to her and wants to spend more time with her. As the crazy and often hilarious adventures continue, the plot weaves in matrimonial proposals, international travel, and of course, the hustle and bustle of India, the often chaotic traffic, and the essence of this vibrant, crazy, and yet warm culture.

Afaq: I'm Trapped in India by Timothy Reinhardt can be classified as a non-stop comedy of errors in a certain sense. In a broader sense, it is a fictionalized account of travels and experiences of a foreigner in India. All of the three main characters are well drawn, and I especially liked the genuine rapport conveyed between Sid and Afaq. Although these two central characters often squabble, there is an underlying friendship and affection between them that has been subtly and yet superbly portrayed. I also enjoyed the hilarious scenes between the two while driving and on the run that range from amusing to downright funny. All in all, this is a light, fun comedy and I would recommend it.
