Alain & the Duke: A Clash at Sea Series Novella is an erotic historical romance written by A.E. Kendall. Augustin had remonstrated with Alain about leaving his palace at such an early hour in the morning, but Alain had insisted. He was reluctant to jeopardize in any way his beloved Duke's reputation, knowing that the Marquis already had some suspicions about his son and Alain's friendship, and he also feared his own stern father's displeasure at seeing his son still attired in the clothing he left in the day before. Alain had been careful to avoid the Draysburg line, lest he be mistaken as a courier for the resistance, but he had failed to consider that the line was not set and had shifted. Alain detoured the area he knew to avoid and hadn't noticed the rope stretched out across the road in front of him until his progress was abruptly terminated, and he landed sprawling in the dirt. His captors considered him to be a spy for the resistance, figuring his circuitous route was an effort to evade them. No matter how much Commander Roget roared and threatened to hang him as a spy, Alain was determined not to implicate his lover in any way. He would die first.

A.E. Kendall's erotic historical romance, Alain & the Duke: A Clash at Sea Series Novella, is a fast-paced and suspenseful story that had me wondering what would happen next until the very end of the tale. The author skillfully weaves the life histories of both Alain and Augustin into this tale of loyalty, capture and interrogation. While this is a sensual tale, the relationship between the two men is shown to be a mutually respectful and loving one where each partner is willing to give up everything to protect the other. I also found that the erotic passages in Alain & the Duke were beautifully and sensitively written. Kendall admirably points out the stresses and dangers faced by men and women whose love was considered forbidden and punishable by death at that time in history, and she does so in a compelling and lovely story. Alain & the Duke is highly recommended.
