In Alex and Jade: His Wyrd against Hers by Susan Netteland Gerbi, Prince Alex and Princess Jade are young adults in an era where it is expected that parents will make prudent political matches for their children. The children accept this practice and can only hope that their marriages eventually become love matches.

Jade's marital future is up in the air, but Alex is paired with Gisela, a gawky, pimply, red-headed teen. But it's Gisela's older, beautiful half-sister Bertha who catches Alex's eye. Bertha is a bastard daughter with an ambitious drive to marry above her station. Having caught Alex's attention, she hopes to lure him away from Gisela. Alex is sent away for a two-year apprenticeship. During that time, Gisela keeps up a correspondence with him, but Alex is also secretly writing to Bertha, who is sending him wildly inappropriate letters designed to inflame his testosterone. So which girl does Alex marry? Do Jade's parents ever settle her future? What item will Jade's dog Iggy steal today? Will their mom Amber ever find her Bunny? Will the king's wine cellar ever get restocked?

Holy Bovine Ruminant! Alex and Jade: His Wyrd against Hers was a fun book for me. As a baby boomer, I got most of the inside jokes (I think!). As a student of Medieval history, I can vouch for Susan Netteland Gerbi's historical accuracy. Although the subtitle, His Wyrd against Hers, made me think of some sort of court case, Alex and Jade are a loving brother and sister with no his-word/her-word predicament. It's just a fun subtitle and definitely a fun read.
