In today’s pandemic, parents may struggle with explaining to their young children how they can keep safe in the COVID-19 world. Alez Learns About Germs by Karen Allen Howard and illustrated by Debbie J. Hefke is an educational picture book that can help them do just that. Little Alez has to stay home because of invisible germs that are making people sick. Why is the mailman wearing a mask, she wonders? Why can’t she hug him as she used to do? Why does her mother spray a package before opening it? And why must Alez wash her hands after handling the books and puzzles inside? Through these examples and others, Alez learns how to keep germs away by wearing a mask, social distancing, washing her hands, and using a disinfectant.

In Alez Learns About Germs, nurse Karen Allen Howard provides a simple yet entertaining story to help children understand how to keep safe in today’s world. Alez and her family are portrayed as very friendly and approachable human-like rabbits who go about typical daily tasks such as grocery shopping and receiving packages at home. The full-color illustrations reflect a happy family that easily and comfortably handles the requirements for keeping safe while still having fun and enjoying life. I particularly liked how the concept of social distancing is illustrated using Alez’s father’s height and how the singing of “Happy Birthday” and the “ABC song” while washing hands can help ensure that children do this task thoroughly while having fun. A practical and useful book.
