When the Dark God Renoris defeated the Creator, all of the world of Yalis fell into chaos. Renoris and his Chosen have dominated the world of men, capturing them in a submission never seen before - nearly crushing the human spirit. Fillon has done the weary and back-breaking work in the mines ever since the fall of the Creator, ensuring that his family is kept safe by his toil. Fillon has seen all attempts at escape or rebellion, crushed in blood and the screams of men. When he sees the beginnings of another rebellion, he trudges on to work, curious, but knowing that it will not work. So when the raiding party breaks through the Tasker forces that control the mines, he doesn't quite know what to do. Legend speaks of a crystal shard that the Fallen Creator filled with power, giving people a way to protect Yalis once he had left. The shard has been found and now one man sets out to win back their world.

What an AWESOME novella. While I have never read a Brian Beam book before, you can bet that I will be looking him up. Alinor's Shard does exactly what a novella should: intrigue, mystify, and captivate so that you want to read more from that author or about that world. Alinor's Shard reflects an older, grittier style of fantasy that has been neglected in the current years. With action, mysticism, adventure, and true depth of emotion, this is one story that is definitely worth the read.
