Grey’s daughter, Hannah, died when she was eight years old, caused by a hit and run. He joined a secret time traveling organization as an assassin soon after that. Now after 10 years, he’s still clinging to their promise that they'll let him go back and stop his daughter from dying. Yet, he discovers a disturbing detail during a routine mission. Wayne Billingham, the man whom he’s supposed to capture, tells Grey that the organization is never going to let him change anything. Now, his fellow assassin and friend, Allie, goes rogue back in time and she’s about to reveal a painful reality from his past.

With this short story, even a slow reader can breeze through Ernie Luis’ Alternate (The Alternate Series Book 1). On the other hand, the plot isn't fast paced but is not plodding either. Short stories are open to risks of being rushed, formulaic or forced. Alternate is definitely none of those. Luis’ prose is clean and straightforward. The characters are substantially fleshed out, regardless of the length of the story.

All in all, Luis’ book is a fast and enjoyable read. It is as riveting as any lengthy sci-fi novels. The book as a whole is very well-edited, and the time travel element in its premise is a boon for any sci-fi fans. Its ending is brilliant, leaving readers with a cliffhanger that demands continuity. I personally can't wait to see how this series will progress. The Alternate universe no doubt has endless possibilities.
