American Nomads by N.L. McLaughlin is a New Adult novel that focuses on Beth’s coming of age story. Beth craves a life of freedom, travel, and adventure. She wants to be famous online, but her boring life does not allow it. However, the opportunity arises when she meets River and her friends. River, Cash, Zac, Teague, and Finn live their lives on their terms. Drifters who travel from one place to another without a single care in the world; Beth is enamored, to say the least. Joining the crew on their adventures is the easiest decision she ever made. However, very soon Beth realizes that her internet fame can cost her a lot more than just the security of her home. Being part of the traveling adventurous group is not what she believed in. When things become dangerous, Beth has to decide if she wants to stay to keep her online career or does she value her life more?

With Gabby Pettito fresh in my mind, Beth’s story feels just a little more realistic and believable to me. Author N.L. McLaughlin doesn’t hold back anything from the very beginning. We meet the vital characters from the get-go, and readers get a pretty good understanding of which character has what intentions. Beth’s character is not gullible by any means, but she is not that smart about her life choices. The narrative is fragmented, it has plenty of flashbacks and those are very important for character development. The pace is fast, which makes the story even easier to read and enjoy. I enjoyed how Beth slowly caught on to what was happening and what she needed to do to stay safe. American Nomads is all about perseverance, chasing your dream, and surviving the unexpected. It is one of those fantastic novels that stay with you for years to come.
