American Outrage is a non-fiction health/wellness book written by Beau Chapman. The author introduces his topic with a startling and tragic statistic, one he refers to as an 'American Tragedy.' According to a study published in the Journal of Patient Safety, the third leading cause of death in the United States at that time was medical error. Chapman had come across this statistic in an article by the Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit that collects statistics relating to medical performance and mistakes that impact patients' lives. He began to apply techniques and practices he had honed during his professional career, and developed a proposal that would use technology to ensure that every medical professional had access to the latest in medical technology and advances, and would be accountable for failure to use that information to keep their patients free from harm. Over the last few years, Chapman has offered his proposal to the Veterans Administration and other governmental entities; however, his efforts have met with little or no response. He includes in his book a full bibliography of sources for his information.

Beau Chapman's health/wellness non-fiction work, American Outrage, airs some very alarming statistics indeed. I found the annual number of deaths to be as unacceptable as he does, and I was intrigued by his application of business practices in his Proposal. American Outrage is a well-written and persuasive work that not only discusses the unacceptable state of medical care in this country, but also offers a practical model for a state-of-the-art medical system that would ensure optimal health results for patients. I can understand his frustration and entertain some hope that at least some of his ideas have actually fallen on fertile ground. I especially appreciated his detailed bibliography and intend to read further on this most important issue. American Outrage is recommended reading for anyone who cares about the current condition of the healthcare industry in this country.
