Karen Arnpriester’s novella "Anessia’s Quest" is a beautifully narrated touching story of a young girl who faces harsh, even violent, conditions from very early on in life, but who still manages not only to positively affect the lives of her loved ones but to extend her love and kindness to many others who are facing the same hardships and neglect. In the midst of this whirlwind of events, she also has to deal with the added burden of the transition to adulthood and the joys of young love. Anessia, while still in spirit form, accepts to live a human life, fully aware of the difficulties ahead. Paigne, her earthly incarnation, has experienced a rough life in a dysfunctional home, neglect and even abuse from her early years. Somewhere along the way she meets Lenny, her soul mate. Together they go through the ups and downs of adolescence and life. When Paigne allows God in her life, the process of change is set in motion. How will her life unfold? Will she manage to heal her scars or will she live a life of resentment towards others and herself?

Anessia’s story captured my interest from the very first moment and kept it to the very last line. Paigne’s turbulent life, filled with heartache and needless pain, is something many people will be able to relate to. Her strength of character and her unwavering love for God allow her to deeply impact the lives of those around her. Her soul’s calling to reach out and help those who are suffering is a life lesson indeed: life hardships are valuable teachers to help us evolve and not serve as an excuse to dwell in self-pity. The author conveys some uncomfortable truths through this extremely motivational story, which I highly recommend. It touched my soul deeply and I am confident it will do the same for everyone, whether they are religious or not.
