In Assumed by MHR Geer, Anne responds to an emergency message from her friend Sandy. Arriving on the Island of Saint Martin, she follows SMS instructions to arrive at their accommodation, but her friend doesn’t show up. Instead, the police notify her that Sandy, also known as “Gilda,” is dead. Assisted by two very different men, Luke and Lucien, Anne follows cryptic clues to recover the treasure Sandy has secreted away. Anne is devastated by grief and the discovery that “Gilda” seems unlike the Sandy she knew. Can Anne succeed in unraveling the secrets that put Sandy in danger, and survive without being murdered herself?

Assumed by MHR Geer provides the reader with a novel-length puzzle to untangle. I liked Anne and shivered when I feared that she could get killed as well. I enjoyed the way the intimate friendship between the two girls created a series of ciphers that only Anne could decode. The messages that kept arriving after Sandy’s death were uncanny and created a sense that Sandy was still alive, although I knew this was the product of modern technology. I was surprised and fascinated by the character of “Gilda” who was so clever and manipulative. She seemed like a convincing alter ego for Sandy, which was strange because Anne seemed to have known Sandy so well. Anne also seemed a little naïve, and I was concerned she would trust the wrong man and get herself into horrible trouble. The book was different from the usual thriller or cozy mystery, and I relished every page.
