After centuries of depleting the planet's resources without a plan to rejuvenate the Earth, it is finally on its last legs. Calamity strikes fast but mismanagement by world governments exacerbates the situation and wipes out whatever defenses are left so that by the time the ice caps melt there are no measures in place to prevent millions from dying in the global floods. The world leaders come together with a bold plan to secure what is left of the planet with an ambitious water project in the Sahara. Just when a reprieve is close, scientists stumble on something that changes the entire equation. The ultimate endgame is upon us and it doesn't look good for anyone in Awal-Lantis: The Merfolks Return by Ebrahim Navsa.

Ebrahim Navsa takes excerpts from some of the most famous myths of our time and uses them to spin a truly incredible tale. Using the collapse of the global system as a theme is a masterstroke. With global warming and deforestation front burner topics today, there is no better way of awakening the millions of young minds on the planet to the dangers that lie ahead if drastic action is not taken quickly. The characters in the book are well defined as Navsa explains the details of their predicament to perfection. Awal-Lantis is one for all ages, a blend of science and fantasy that only a true genre aficionado will appreciate. This book is as simple as it is impressive. An enthralling piece of work.

Awal-Lantis: The Merfolks Return is a sci-fi/fantasy novel by Ebrahim Navsa. In the not-too-distant future, humanity's greed and "me-first" ideology have driven the planet to a point of no return, exhausting its resources and raising the overall global temperatures to an extent that has led to the melting of the polar ice caps and submergence of coastal areas. To channel the excess water into the Sahara desert, the world's governing bodies send a team of scientists and experts to excavate the desert. However, their plans are stopped midway when a mysterious sphere emerges out of the water, bearing merpeople humans had only ever heard of in mythology. These humanoids called their kingdom Awal-Lantis, and their king invites representatives from humans to forge a treaty that may be the only hope the future of humanity has. But soon, a new threat emerges.

Author Ebrahim Navsa incorporates some increasingly relevant themes into this fascinating sci-fi/fantasy tale that is rich in scope and wonder. Using a multiple POV narrative style, Navsa creates a captivating apocalyptic story where humanity is on the verge of becoming its own undoing (much like the real world), and its fate lies at the hands of technologically advanced underwater humanoids far older than human civilization. A fantastical ride on its own, Awal-Lantis: The Merfolks Return also provides a sharp critique of the capitalistic greed that is destroying the planet by raising global temperatures to soon-to-be unbearable heights. If you're a fantasy/sci-fi lover who loves meta-commentary in books, definitely grab a copy.
