Be You Big is a children’s picture book by Raven Howell. “Be you big, be you small, be you short, be you tall.” Some children are taller than others. Some are skinny, shy, or outspoken. Children can be very loud, or they can laugh a lot. Maybe they tend to be on the quiet side too, but are always smiling. Being teased by bullies will make anyone feel unhappy. They can develop low self-esteem and feel very insecure. Being curious of often part of a child’s nature. That’s how they are able to learn new, exciting things, or just get into a bit of trouble, which is normal. Being friendly and trusting are also what they are too. Maybe you and your friends are small or brave, just like the characters in this book.
In her picture book, Be You Big, intended for the 5-8 age group, Raven Howell encourages children to accept who they are without apologies. She wants them to know that they are unique, and they should never feel ashamed or embarrassed for looking different or having opposing opinions from others. They will always be loved and appreciated. Anke Rappen created lovely watercolor illustrations depicting children engaged in various activities to match the simple, uplifting, rhyming words. Be You Big by Raven Howell is a picture book that urges children to be themselves. It can be used as learning material for teachers as well as for parents. Raven Howell’s Be You Big is recommended.
