Bearmates' Birthday Bash is a children’s book written and illustrated by J.M. West. Today, in the land of BearBerry Briar, it is Honey Black Bear’s birthday. All of the different bears are busy making food and are setting up for the party. Finding a way to distract Honey from her favorite log in Honeycomb Hollow would be a difficult task, but if all of the bears collaborated in a fool-proof plan, they were sure to succeed. Bea Bear gathers the bears together, one by one, but when she reaches Bamboo Forest, Bea discovers the party balloons and honey, which she had gathered and hidden there, were now gone. However, she is relieved to find that Pammy the Panda had simply hidden them elsewhere. All of the bears set up for the party and then hide as Honey is ushered into Bamboo Forest, cranky that she had missed out on the honey prize to which a bee had been leading her. But Honey’s anger is short-lived when all her best friends jump out from behind the trees and surprise her with a wonderful day of fun, friendship, and (best of all) honey!

I not only enjoyed the entertainment and fun which filled the pages of Bearmates' Birthday Bash, but also relished the educational aspect about the habitats and behaviors of different bears of the world. J.M. West’s book has all of the winning ingredients for a successful educational children’s book series. I loved that some of the bears made a new friend along the way – one which was not of the bear variety but was friendly, just the same – and that the honey bee which Honey had been following earlier had chosen to also attend the surprise party. Love and laughter is what the Bearmate series is all about, and I found myself smiling from ear to ear with each turn of the page. The words and illustrations brought this magical tale to life beautifully, and I feel this book would be ideally stocked in home and school libraries, as well as for fund raising purposes for nature reserves for the welfare of animals. I recommend Bearmates' Birthday Bash to children of all ages, whether the book is read to them at story time or they choose to read it themselves as an early read-it-yourself book.
