"Beautifully Absurd" by Robert Ashley MD is a curious medical fiction book that introduces us to Paul Matthews, a man who rebelled against the status quo of being a husband, father and bread winner. This rebellion will leave him with the desire to see the son he left behind, after he had a stroke which left him connected him to a ventilator. He cannot communicate and the advanced care directive was never filled out. Even if his longed for Son arrives what should be done?

Robert Ashley takes us into a fictional story that could just as easily be a true one. The terrible state of the medical system today and unpreparedness in families is something that anyone can relate to. Personally I did not find Paul Matthews as an overly likable character. However I liked the fact that I did not like him. He was human and very flawed and we follow him through his life of struggles and choices as he lies in a bed connected to the ventilator.

I like that Robert Ashley made me think about my own life and my own medical care. Moreover, I could relate with the reasons that Paul Matthews made the choices he did. I think that anyone who reads this book could find the parallels to their own life and see the important messages that are given clearly within the text. Robert Ashley set out to bring you a message through fiction, and I feel he has succeeded.
