Beige by Ci’Monique Green is a delightful story of the life of Josiah Kessler. Josiah is the only surviving child of Obadiah Wade Kessler; a quiet man of integrity and strength. The tale takes the reader on a fascinating journey through many decades. It tells of Josiah’s family connection to slavery. It moves through Josiah’s life as a child, covering the insecurities of an only child of a single parent, bringing history alive as it unfolds. Josiah learns some harsh lessons after meeting Mellie. To him, she is his soulmate and can do no wrong. What he eventually learns is that love can be glorious, but can also hurt. When he is befriended by neighbour Dave, Josiah’s life is transformed in ways he could never imagine. As time goes by, they help each other, grow together, and become closer than either could ever imagine.

You’ll be taken on a trip back to World Wars 1 and 2; back to the Ku Klux Klan days of ignorance and intolerance, all the while staying beside Josiah as he matures and learns the ups and downs of life. Where he is led is nothing short of amazing, considering his humble beginnings, and I loved every second of this very different genre. It is written with empathy and great emotion and does not fail the reader one little bit. It is an engrossing story and a delight to read. Highly recommended reading for teens and adults alike.
