Ben is a beagle. He’s always on the go and he wants to be everywhere at once. He loves to go on car rides. Living on the farm, there’s lots of vehicles with wheels. He wants to ride them all, but his owner keeps telling him “No”. He doesn’t understand. She takes him on car rides to see the vet. He always feels safe in the car. Why not in the tractors and other farm vehicles as well? His owner just doesn’t want Ben getting hurt. Farm vehicles have a purpose and they’re very big. Sometimes when they’re on the move, the person driving the farm vehicle can’t see someone as small as Ben. A very active little beagle, Ben doesn’t understand the importance of “No”. It’s a word meant to keep him safe.

Donna F. Slaton’s picture book story, Ben Beagle Rides, is written in rhyming verse. With vibrant illustrations, it’s a simple story aimed at the kindergarten to Grade 3 age group. It may be simple in its presentation, but the message is an important one: children must learn the importance of the word “No”. It often means that the person caring for them just wants to keep them safe. Young children are just like young beagles. They need to be told over and over again that very simple, but powerful word “No”. This is a great way to introduce young readers to the idea that they are not the only ones that have to learn boundaries for safety’s sake. Well done!
