Beneath the Satin Gloves by Britt Skrabanek is a thrilling tale of time travel, WWII and nothing being what it should be. Alina Feuer wakes in a strange bedroom, in a strange bed with a man she doesn’t know ... torn from her modern-day life and thrust back in time. Managing to escape without arousing suspicion, she runs smack into a man she should know but doesn’t remember. It’s wartime Germany and Alina hasn’t a clue who she is, who she should be and what she’s doing. And so begins a journey, a life of spying, of sleeping with the enemy and trying hard to hang on to her own identity, while living a parallel life as a clinically depressed woman who fears sleep in modern-day America. Alina, code-name Sparrow, entertainer and spy. She has only her wit and her instinct to guide her, and glamour as a weapon in a deadly mission that could have far reaching consequences.

Beneath the Satin Gloves by Britt Skrabanek is something very different. Most time travel books are clunky and awkward; this one wasn’t. The story slips seamlessly from one era to another, back and forth with ease, and it’s been done in such a way that you can't lose track of what’s happening. The first page dragged me into the story and I never came up for air until I got to the end. Action on every page, romance, thrills, spills, humor and twists; this story has it all along with the dark and terrifying era of Germany in WWII. It was a mixture of the serious mixed with a bit of fun. A strong protagonist, identifiable and very likable, in a story that is factually correct, well researched and incredibly well written. The plot is amazing, so unique and so well done that it’s easy to slide into the story and feel as though you are there. A beautiful story with a tragic edge to it, and Britt Skrabanek is an incredibly talented writer. This is a book for anyone who loves a story with a strong heroine and anyone who just wants to lose themselves for a few hours in a story that you won’t want to end.
