Criminal activity is ramping up in a pleasant small community in the charming mystery novel Between a Rock and a Hard Place (Cobble Cove Mystery #2) by Debbie De Louise. John and Alicia McKinney have put their pasts behind them and have forged a new one for themselves. They are now the proud parents of six-month-old twins and are co-authors of a mystery novel series. It is now the Christmas season and John's wealthy sister, Pamela, has gifted Alicia and John a second honeymoon in New York City. Pamela will stay with the babies, while the two of them get away. As a new mother, Alicia is uncertain about leaving the children, but John insists he needs time away and the children will be fine with his sister. Still unsure, Alicia picks up a few presents to take with them to deliver to her best friend, Gilly, who lives near the city.

While shopping, Alicia spots a suspicious looking man loitering around town. Later that evening she is frightened when she hears someone following her home from work. Soon after, the local gift shop is robbed. If that wasn't enough, someone tries to get into the house while she is alone and cuts the cord to their lighted outdoor decorations. John discounts her fear as imagination, pranksters, and her being overwrought. He insists they should take their vacation, and that nothing will happen to their twins. But what if Alicia isn't imagining things? What if something sinister is unfolding behind the scenes in the quiet village of Cobble Cove? Will her babies be safe without her there to protect them?

Between a Rock and a Hard Place by Debbie De Louise is the second installment in a fascinating mystery series. It is a captivating story which revolves around a library and the local citizens of an enchanting small town outside of New York City. The plot, developed and built around the library and the community, slowly reveals the mystery and criminal activity intricately woven within the story line. Add in John's nonchalance for his wife and children's welfare and the reader is kept on the edge of their seat, waiting for the ax to fall. With the intense build-up, the book comes to a climactic and satisfying finish. For those who like a quiet, cozy mystery, this is a delightful amateur mystery novel that is sure to please.
