Beyond Pipe Dreams And Platitudes is a compilation of essays in which clinical psychologist Dr. Geraldine K. Piorkowski shares her knowledge from fifty years of working with people from diverse socio-economic, racial, and cultural backgrounds. She discovered that everyone has common requirements to bring fulfillment and a sense of belonging into their lives. Throughout these eight insightful essays, we examine the hopes, fears, and anxieties that bind every person in society. What are the root causes of our negative thought processes and behavior? Discover why the act of positive thinking can sometimes be detrimental to our healing, and why facing our negative experiences is necessary. There are also essays that investigate the subjects of romantic love, luck, and narcissism. Is there such emotion as love at first sight, and why is our first love so poignant? How can we recognize narcissistic traits in someone, why do they behave this way, and when does the level of narcissism become dangerous? Gain a clear understanding of why some people seem luckier, more content, and empathetic while others are engulfed in the darkness of negativity.

In Beyond Pipe Dreams And Platitudes, author Geraldine K. Piorkowski, Ph.D. presented such a clear and concise breakdown of human behavior. The explanations were intriguing, especially around facing painful memories and dispelling the myth that we always have to think positive thoughts. I also found the explanation for resisting the feeling of vulnerability very helpful. I was fascinated by the reasons some people process similar pieces of information so differently. This book gave me such a clear understanding of why people think and behave in certain ways. I loved this quote from the book: "Self-awareness of negative thoughts is the jumping-off point for the development of a broader richer worldview." I loved the sections on The Chronic Complainer and the rise of narcissistic traits in children. The research data and behavioral experiments really made for compelling reading too, and certainly substantiated the arguments put forward. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to improve their relationships with others and gain a deeper understanding of human behavior.
