Beyond The Gate is an urban crime novel by Nicole E. Avery. Seventeen-year-old Nyla Slayings' life didn't turn out quite the way it was supposed to after her parents were deported six years ago. Forced to live with her abusive foster father, the only respite she gets is being a vendor of food products at the local baseball stadium. However, things take a turn for the worse when her foster father catches her being intimate with her boyfriend, Juan, leading to a confrontation that results in his death. Plagued by guilt, Nyla and Juan find themselves blackmailed by a corrupt detective who wants to take advantage of their situation. Deeply in love, Nyla and Juan are determined to get through their predicament together. But Juan's untimely accident puts Nyla into a dire situation she never could've envisioned.

A tragic tale about parental abuse, systematic corruption, and the loss of innocence, Beyond The Gate is an absorbing read from start to finish. Author Nicole E. Avery tells a gut-wrenching story of a foster child who finds herself being the victim of abuse by the very people meant to protect her. The narrative follows Nyla, an enterprising seventeen-year-old who struggles to navigate her precarious situation surrounded by an abusive father, corrupt cops, and a hostile work environment. Through this captivating crime thriller, Avery tackles some heavy topics, such as child abuse, rape, harassment, corruption, and much more. Nyla is someone you can't help but root for. If you enjoy books containing relevant social issues, don't miss out on Beyond The Gate.

Thank you for writing such a deft and totally brilliant novel. It is absolutely breathtaking and superb my dear. I enjoyed it to the fullest. You have absolutely captured the pain, tolerance, and humility that "we" had to endure working at a baseball stadium (especially you being a vendress) and your personal life as well. Waiting impatiently for the next novel. Wishing you continued success. You're very talented!!! Keep up the great work.

Thoroughly enjoyed Beyond The Gate! Hold on tight for a wild ride into Nyla’s world. The novel draws you into a young woman’s journey into adulthood as she navigates through tragedy, trauma and life on the rough, gritty streets of New York City. The novel’s dark, troubling subject matters are balanced by love, humor and perseverance. Nyla struggles to survive in a world I didn't know existed with maturity and determination culminating in a twist I didn’t see coming. Beyond The Gate is a Home Run (couldn’t resist the pun

This is such a good book! I loved that I would take it with me along commutes to read and get lost in the enticing story line. Reading the first chapter was naturally tough I had to put the book down for a few days but then kept reading and got sucked in to Nyla's love life and how she navigates the various challenges that come her way. Thank you Nicole for expanding my mind and for putting a good book out there for people to keep foster youth in mind, i love the outro!

Beyond the Gate is exactly what it is... it's beyond the gate. Dr. Avery knocked it out the park. I absolutely love it!. It's an extraordinary read. From beginning to end it keeps you engaged. It's not a dull or boring moment in the book where you become bored. There are no chapter that makes you want to put the book down from boredom. Like I said, it keeps you engaged from the descriptions of the environment Nyla is in to the twists and turns it takes in her life. I would pass this book onto anyone. I can't wait to see what Dr. Avery does next.
