A woman found murdered in the local cemetery shocks a small Montana town in the suspenseful murder mystery, Bitter End (A Bitter Roots Mystery) by CJ Carmichael. Justin Pittman, a lawyer in the small town of Lost Trail, is preparing for a stem-cell transplant. In an unexpected turn of events, his wife Willow, who deserted him months before, turns up on his doorstep. Although she lives states away and doesn't stay in contact with Justin, Willow inexplicably found out about his cancer. Now she dares to show up out of the blue with the intention of taking Geneva, their four-year-old daughter to Willow's Colorado home. Because of his illness, Justin realizes if he takes legal action, the outcome probably would be in Willow's favor. Not wanting to put Geneva through any more trauma, Justin accepts the inevitable outcome. Only, someone murders Willow before she can follow through with her plans. Unfortunately, Justin is the person who discovers her snow-covered body. Willow's death may be a solution to Justin's dilemma, but would he resort to murder just to keep Geneva from her? Could there be someone else in their close-knit community who also had a strong motive to kill Willow?

Bitter End (A Bitter Roots Mystery) by CJ Carmichael is a gripping murder mystery with hidden depths. Once you pick it up, you can't put it down. The plot of this riveting tale is loaded with suspense that continues to build until it comes to an unexpected revelation at the story's conclusion. The unsuspected evil, hidden just below the surface of a facade of benevolence which has been simmering for decades, is slowly being revealed in each episode of this stunning series. Although it is the third book in the series, it is delightfully surprising how each installment keeps getting better. I am so caught up in the personable citizens in the community of Lost Trail that I am eagerly waiting for the next book. Even though it is one in a series, it does well as a standalone, and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves a thrilling and suspenseful murder mystery.
