Black Halo: The Witch & the Guardian by A.S. Aramiru is a young adult fantasy dystopian story that will keep readers on the edge of their seats, trying to discover the mystery. When a mysterious light appears in the sky, the strange dystopian world erupts into violence, confusion, and chaos. The world leaders blamed the confusion on a group of young people known as the gifted. The gifted have supernatural gifts and talents like element bending, clairvoyance, teleportation, and telepathy. These leaders think the Light gave these teens their powers as it also created the witch. The media makes the witch out to be evil, but as the story unfolds the reader is left questioning whom to trust. What is real and what is perceived? Who is evil and who is just trying to save the world?

The themes in this story are very good topics for a young adult book, with friendship and loyalty being the two most prevalent. Young adult fantasy readers will enjoy the premise of this story and love the fantasy world building. The characters are unique and well written. The villain is likeable, making the mystery that much more intriguing. The reader will constantly reevaluate what he thinks that he knows about this story and what is actually true, and won't know exactly what is going on until the very last page. It is definitely a page turner full of action and adventure.
