Bludgeon Ball: Genesis – Play to Win by Vuyisile Sibeko is a futuristic sci-fi novel. Nati only knows one person – old man Raditz. She has never seen another human being in her short 16-year life span and is too young to remember the destruction of Earth. Now she and Raditz must make their way to safety, to what is left of civilisation across lands that have been wasted by the burning fireball of the African sun. The day Nati sets eyes on a human being is the day she loses the best friend she has ever known. From here, her life takes a tumbling turn and there is only one way to get out alive. She must play and win a game of Bludgeon Ball, a game she has never heard of, let alone played. The stakes are high – her life – and the game is vicious. If she can survive with some bones intact, she may just make it. Will she make it through the game? What will life hold for her?

Bludgeon Ball: Genesis was a strange novel. Well written for a book that is set some time in the future and not too bad a story line either. It was interesting, a little different from many post-apocalyptic novels and with a bit more go in it as well. Graphic descriptions in places but that made the story what it was. It would probably make a very good sci-fi film for TV or even a TV series.

Bludgeon Ball Genesis is an exciting, adventure-packed story starring a super-strong sixteen-year-old Nati who loses the only father figure she has in a tragic incident. Nati then meets equally spirited Rachelle, who is responsible for her father figure’s passing and the pair instantly dislike each other. But when each of them has nothing and no one else in their life, they are forced to join forces and stick together to navigate through their dystopian world. As they are travelling, they are taken captive by a group of humans who desperately need Nati to save them from their impending doom. If Nati wants to escape safely with her life, she will have to participate in a game of Bludgeon Ball, a game of lethal violence as a means to an end together with the untrustworthy Rachelle. The highlight of this book is the author’s unique narrative ability, paired with the strong use of the language. The author has portrayed the story well using varied use of vocabulary which paints a vivid picture in readers’ minds to hold their attention. However, some slight grammatical errors or misspellings can be fixed to improve the book as a whole. Apart from that, the story flows smoothly and included unexpected yet believable twists and turns that will keep readers guessing from the beginning to the end. In my opinion, I thought the attraction between Nati and Daki was slightly unnecessary, as it was interesting yet it did not seem to serve any purpose or lead anywhere in particular. Although I understand that perhaps it is to be explored in the next book. Personally, the bludgeon ball game was exciting but just a little too lengthy and seemed to go on for slightly too long. Overall, the author has done a commendable job and I give this book four out of five stars.
