Bright Stars: A Teen Detective Mystery is a work of fiction by Tasche Laine in the mystery and suspense subgenres. It forms the second installment in the Chronicles of V series and is intended for the young adult reading audience. In this thrilling account, we are reunited with protagonist V as she tries to resume a normal life by learning to drive. But there’s something not quite right about her new instructor, and a series of local burglaries sees V suddenly embroiled in another mystery that she is determined to solve, even if it costs her the friends she’s made so far.

Tasche Laine has hit the nail on the head in creating a mystery niche for teen readers that sits neatly somewhere between the cozy genre and the more hard-edged adult mystery reads. This is largely thanks to the fantastic character work around V, who is deeply relatable, charming, and clever, but not without her flaws. The dialogue sounds suitably teen but also gives the whole novel a slick feel, with a confident author who makes you feel as if no stone will be left unturned, and then delivers on that promise with gusto. Fans of shows like Veronica Mars are sure to find many charming similarities, but with a much more modern twist. Readers of all ages can learn a thing or two from the socially conscious message about growing up and being confident in yourself. I would certainly recommend Bright Stars to mystery fans everywhere, YA and beyond.
