Sam Smith, fresh out of the military, moves to San Francisco in hopes of knowing what to do with his life. He works as a manager in Sharkey’s Wharf and spends his nights in bars listening to some great jazz music. Hannah Green works with him in Sharkey’s Wharf as a bookkeeper. They don’t usually hang out, but circumstances have forced them to be friendly with each other. While in one bar, Sam meets Georgie Steiner, a girl his age with a college degree, who ran to San Francisco but is still supported by her parents. Three different people connected by the music and uncertainties of life will support each other, in some way, in Brilliant Corners by Ron Ballard.

All the characters in Brilliant Corners seem to be drifting; they easily get bored, they don’t usually know what is next in their lives, they enter relationships casually and they appear to be always on the run, but they are good people and their flaws make them more real and relatable. Music played a big role in the story and it was interesting to read how the music affected and shaped the characters’ lives. Ron Ballard wrote a wonderful novel with fascinating and diverse characters, though there didn’t seem to be a climax and I think the ending was a little lacking. It was good and I liked the conclusion, but I wanted more; more of the story and more of the people. Still, it was a good read.
