Bruiser’s G’day At The Beach by Diana Smith is a children’s book that is realistically and colorfully illustrated by Julie Leiman Weaver. Bruiser and Dash are two dogs who decide to go to the beach on a hot summer day and have some fun. While Bruiser is young, adventurous, and playful, Dash is more serious and reserved. As they play together, exploring the beach and seeing sandcastles, caves, seaweed and crabs, sweet little gulls, sand dunes, beach towels, and barnacles, an unexpected wave surges from the sea and carries their toy away with it. They watch in dismay as their toy drifts off in the water, but a pelican comes to their rescue, flying above the creatures in the sea and inspiring them to help. Bruiser and Dash watch in amazement as some of the creatures of the sea help to bring their toy ashore.
A great and colorful story for children. The beach setting and the sea are harmoniously rendered in oils and ink, and readers will marvel at the way the illustrator captures the beauty of the sea, allowing the teamwork among Bruiser and Dash's friends to be communicated unmistakably to the young reader. The themes of friendship, teamwork, fun, and adventure are skillfully written and illustrated, and young readers will enjoy reading as the two dogs make new friends and learn more about the animals that live in the sea. Bruiser’s G’day at the Beach is a wonderful book for preschoolers and Diana Smith creates the kind of adventure that is suitable for them, with the ever deepening blue of the sky and the sea creating a wonderful backdrop to the illustrations.
