Burning Bridges: A Jon Frederick Novel by Frank F. Weber is a true-crime thriller with a fascinating plot and compelling characters. When Harper Rowe hires PI Jon Frederick to help find her biological father, Billy Blaze, all she expects is to be able to connect with her father after the death of her mother. What the investigator unearths about Blaze is disturbing. As the investigation continues, darker secrets about Harper’s father come to light and her world and relationships are shaken to the core. The truth is unsettling: her father is a monster, a psychopath who disappeared after living in St. Cloud for decades. Is Harper Rowe ready for what comes next?

This is a mesmerizing tale that is well-plotted. It is inspired by a real crime story that happened fifteen years ago. The story is set in 2020 against the backdrop of a society riddled by a pandemic and riots. The prose is gorgeous and sprinkled with fascinating descriptions. The characters are wonderfully written and fleshed out. The author has the uncanny ability to write scenes that are not only focused but detailed. Readers will be engaged by the emotional strength of the narrative and characters they cannot ignore. While this story is based on true crime, the author renders it believable by infusing it with realism. The setting, which includes the Covid-19 pandemic, is brilliantly developed and readers will enjoy how the author allows this aspect of the setting to affect the characters. Frank F. Weber’s dazzling storytelling and deft plotting create a tale that is both accomplished and affecting and one that fans of sleuth will adore.
