Reading Calico Spy by Margaret Brownley was absolute pleasure from page one to the very end. The main characters, Katie Madison and Sheriff Branch Whitman, literally jump off the page and into the reader’s heart. Katie feels unlovable and has dedicated her life to the Pinkerton National Detective Agency. Her current assignment poses one challenge after another, testing her detective skills while she and the handsome, anti-Pinkerton sheriff struggle to solve two local murders.

Margaret Brownley’s research and knowledge of the old west give this story incredible authenticity. The Harvey House environment proved positively delightful and its myriad of characters were believable, with true-to-life feelings and predicaments. The old west lingo keeps the reader in stitches. Brownley’s clever wit and attention to detail leave no stone unturned in this romantic adventure. The reader sleuths right along with the heroine, investigating each perplexing clue.

The skill with which Margaret Brownley weaves intricate subplots throughout the story keeps the reader guessing. Unexpected twists pull many secondary characters into the forefront to befriend and embrace the reader. The seasoned writing of Margaret Brownley reaffirms that research, authenticity, and strong characters create a saga that you don’t want to miss. Once this book is in hand to read, the reader is advised to clear their calendar. This “clean” read combines elements of faith, mystery and romance into a high quality page-turner. This book is pure delight.
