Cannabis, The Conundrum by author Michelle Horkings-Brigham is a non-fiction work focusing on the social issue of the legalization of cannabis. It is sub-titled as an exploration of the ‘Medical Mystery; Environmental Enigma, Neighborhood Nightmare’ aspects of the drug. It considers how cannabis benefits the human body, but also the implications of the environmental impact of mass-produced plants, and the direct impact that legalization has had on residents of Washington State in particular. This consideration of data has been presented as a collection of information which includes local surveys, journal articles, publications by the government, personal experiences and testimonies, all of which attempts to convey the complexity of the issue at hand.

Author Michelle Horkings-Brigham does a superb job in handling the vast amount of data that has resulted from the legalization of cannabis in Washington State. She puts forth a strong argument that this is an important issue which requires much more legislation in order to give it a sustainable future that is not negatively impacting on other areas of life, such as zoning and water usage. I found the arguments made compelling, and they are written in a straightforward and accessible style which anyone can understand. Some of the data used was a little heavy to go through, but Horkings-Brigham rephrases and explains well to enable the reader to connect the issues and translate them in real teams. Overall, Cannabis, The Conundrum presents a vital issue that is impacting countries all over the world right now, with a clear head for the logistical and legislative mountains that still need to be climbed.
