A fine balance between light-hearted romance and deep loss, Catalina Romance by Anastasia Alexander explores the challenges of the 21st century’s dating world. When Charissa is selected to star in the reality TV show Millionaire Engagement, she is hesitant. Her experience in the previous season left her heartbroken. When her niece’s condition worsens, Charissa decides to do everything she can for Ava. She signs up for the show and, soon enough, she is spoilt for choice with different eligible bachelors from different backgrounds falling over each other to woo her. There is Shawn, the charming one; Forester, the polished one; and Andrew, the selfless one. Who will manage to steal her heart as America and the world watches?
Anastasia Alexander’s Catalina Romance is a delightful read with unexpected turns. Alexander veers off from common romance trends as they appear on reality TV and reveals the raw, unedited whirlwind of emotions that constantly bombard both the star and the contestants. Her characters are real and likable and I could not help cheering my favorite millionaire bachelor on. Charissa as the main character is relatable. As the pain she feels from Ava’s illness is exposed, her human side is seen and further makes the plot realistic. The unforgiving side of being in front of the cameras is touched on, which also adds realism to the plot. The end was definitely the best point for me. It is powerful, unexpected and romantic. To all lovers of romance, Catalina Romance will prove to be a wonderful read.
