Cate Decker and the Kye by LC Kolm and M Trenta is a wonderful meld of fantasy and adventure that has the potential to entice both young and adult readers. Eleven-year-old Cate Decker has led an ordinary life, until the search for her cat in the basement brings her into contact with a spiritual mist. She is thrust into another dimension where she encounters the Kye, the American Indian tribe with deep roots in history. Now she knows that she is a descendant of TehKo, the respected healer and shaman of the Kye. She sets out on an adventure with KoBe, the grandson of the first Shaman of the Kye, where she discovers the village of the Kye and the Land of the Dark Moon — their purgatory. Follow her in this mysterious journey as she learns new skills, faces new challenges, and comes to terms with her destiny. Can she become the Bright Fire she is called to be and rescue her people from their purgatory?

Cate Decker is a beautiful character. Her sudden discovery of a world she had never dreamed existed is a powerful premise to get the reader interested in the story. I wanted to know who she really is, intrigued by the new world she slowly gets acquainted with. Character development is impeccable and I enjoyed the fact that the authors allow the protagonist to mature through each step of her journey, and this gives a natural flair to the story. While the idea behind the story is bold, the careful handling of the humanity of the young protagonist lends it the power of realism. The story is fast paced and beautifully plotted, with plot twists that make for an enjoyable reading experience. The unpredictability in the plot, the crispness of prose, and the realism of the characters make this novel a great adventure for readers.

Inspirational, and the story behind the written words are even more inspirational starting with the love of a grandfather for his granddaughter and his unique way to help her with the life she is experiencing.

Chistian Sia's comment, "I wanted to know who she really is, intrigued by the new world she slowly gets acquainted with." captures the purpose of the third of four novels in the story of First Light. Cate Decker's alter personna, Bright Fire, weaves through the novels, Spirits of Light, Hellhounds of Kalda, Cate Decker and the Kye, and Bright Fire. Suffering betrayal, loving family, learning abilities, confronting daunting challenges, and triumphing over near impossible obstacles, Bright Fire returns conscience, morality, and justice to her world.
