Cello’s Tears by Geza Tatrallyay is a thoughtful and lush collection of contemporary free verse that reveals itself in layers, inviting readers to reflect upon universal truths and the importance of seemingly random events and images. Geza Tatrallyay is a global citizen whose writings are infused with flavors from and references to many cultures. Reading them is a pleasurable escape to exotic locales. Each word in Tatrallyay’s poems is carefully considered and masterfully placed. Because there few references to modern technologies and conventions, the collection has a timeless feel. Fear, joy, longing, loneliness, nostalgia and a full complement of universal human emotions are expressed in elegant, elemental tones. From “Japanese Feeling”: By the dim candlelight/I await your coming/with love and soft music:/I hear only the wind/walk softly down the path.

There is a haunting, solitary quality underlying many of Tatrallyay’s verses in Cello’s Tears which makes the reader feel privileged, as if he or she has been taken into confidence in being given the opportunity to experience the vision they contain. This is poetry written with a looming sense of mortality but no fear of obsolescence - these are words intended to look death in the eye and smile. Cello’s Tears exists in celebration of the immortal spirit that defines the human condition. There are a sufficient number of universal truths in Cello’s Tears to justify many repeat readings, each of which will undoubtedly add to the depth and resonance of Tatrallyay’s message. Geza Tatrallyay’s Cello’s Tears offers a resilient mournful hope - the kind of hope that is too often in short supply in our weary, fast-paced modern world.
