In a world where so many creative artists weary themselves with the effort of trying to find anything new to say, it is a rare pleasure to find a poet who speaks about familiar, universal things in simple, straightforward verse clearly intended to warm the heart and bring comfort in a complex and confusing world. Changing Moods by Jon M. Nelson is a beguiling, uncomplicated collection subtitled “a short book of poems from the heart for every occasion.” In a series of themed groupings ranging from ‘American Pride’ to ‘True Romance,’ Nelson examines common threads that connect all of humanity, Unity, faith, love, and longing are all addressed with a homespun honesty that resonates across generations and cultures.

True to its subtitle, Jon M. Nelson’s Changing Moods is exactly the sort of collection one would expect to find tucked into the hollows of podiums and lecterns everywhere, ready to serve at a moment’s notice wherever and whenever an appropriate verse is desired. These poems are truly poetry for the people and the visions they share are the visions we all share. These poems may not be state of the art, but they are most certainly state of the heart and, as such, will speak to anyone with a beating heart and so much as an ounce of human compassion.

Who among us would not benefit from carrying forward these plainly spoken words of wisdom from ‘United World?’ “When people stop putting each other down/Then the walls of hatred will come tumbling down/When it doesn’t matter the color of your skin/Then no one will lose and everyone wins.” Well said, by any measure.
