Has Sean Alexander Luciw written a confounding mish-mash of gibberish or has he shared some of the most amazing and profound mathematical secrets in the universe within the pages of his book, Chaos in Boxes: Twisted Adventures in Music Theory? This well written and exceptionally well thought out book explores musical and mathematical possibilities that most people have not taken into consideration or even know exist. Chaos in Boxes moves through a variety of scientific theories, astrological concepts, music theory and beyond. Yet, Luciw doesn’t write any of this in a dry and boring way. Instead, it is all written with a simplicity that makes it easy to digest, and Luciw incorporates pictures and diagrams to support his explanations.

I was sucked into Chaos in Boxes from the first chapter. Sean Alexander Luciw has an ability to blend humor with scientific concepts that are downright mind-boggling so that, even as my head spun, laughter bubbled forth. However, I also realized that I had to settle in and pay attention to what I was reading if I hoped to understand just where Luciw was headed. As the mother of a wonderful music theorist, I am somewhat accustomed to the moments of what seems like the confounding mish-mash of gibberish I mentioned above. With that being said, I thoroughly enjoyed diving headlong (and soul deep) into the depths of Chaos in Boxes. It is a book that is likely to draw me back time and time again as I continue to try to wrap my human mind around the mathematical concepts that underlie nearly every aspect of our lives.
