There is no doubt whatsoever that what a man leaves behind when he passes from the earth is important to him, but just as important is the way that he approaches that passing. In Chapters: Living with an Incurable Disease: Today Our Lives Changed, Matthew Butner shows the graceful way that a man can approach death with the heart of a lion. Butner’s attitude was much different than many who learn that they have an incurable disease, in his case ALS. To him it was a stroke of good luck to know how and perhaps even when he would die. Why? Because in knowing these things, he was allowed to prepare how he would live out the life that remained. In the six sections: The Beginning, Rationalizing, Focus on Priorities, On the Journey, Others and Ah-has, Butner conveys some very profound messages that come from the deeper source of the lion that lies within. His commentaries about daily living are valuable for anyone that might take a moment to ponder them, but his true intentions in writing them down was simply to sort through his own life and prepare the way toward his death.

I am reminded of Tim McGraw’s hit song, “Live Like You Were Dying,” while reading and pondering the words of Matthew Butner in Chapters: Living with an Incurable Disease: Today Our Lives Changed. Having been rushed to the hospital dying of a heart attack at age 46, I was able to relate to the profound thoughts and wisdom that Matthew shares. Choosing to live like a lion is not an easy choice for many, but once that choice is made, life takes on a much richer quality. Once one understands that death is coming, life truly begins. Matt reinforces that point in a powerful way. Inspiring, profound and powerful, Chapters: Living with an Incurable Disease: Today Our Lives Changed is a lesson on how to live the life you have been given to the fullest, regardless of its duration.
