"Cherokee Talisman" by David-Michael Harding is a strong look into the lives of strong Cherokee warriors during a time when nothing in the land they lived in was certain. You are first introduced to the mighty Cherokee warrior known as the Dragon who sides with the British during the revolutionary war. Dragon believes it is better to deal with the enemy who is far away than the one who is right in your backyard taking your land. When Dragon dies peacefully of a heart attack the warrior that he raised, Totsuhwa, continues fighting. Totsuhwa eventually finds himself working with General Andrew Jackson’s army to root out Seminoles from creek fort.

"Cherokee Talisman" is deeply steeped in history and you can tell that a lot of research went into it, from the rules that the Cherokee followed when fighting to the codes and conduct that they followed for everyday life. I have wanted to get deeper into the history of the Native American nations of our country and the deep culture that they possess. "Cherokee Talisman" seemed like a fantastic place to start in that learning. The book is well-written and paints such a vivid picture for you that you are immediately drawn into the story that it is telling. When I get drawn into a book I can seem to forget everything around me and this happened with "Cherokee Talisman". The characters are strong and forward, each with their own deep-rooted sense of being. I felt that I learned so much about the strong history, the various codes and the character of the warriors and the Cherokee nation as a whole. My heart sank when there was a loss and it soared with their successes. Life has so many ups and downs and never is that more true than when a proud nation is finding their land and way of life threatened by outsiders. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves well-written historical pieces that will take you on an emotional ride.
