There is a special bond that exists between a dog and its owner. Young Dee shares that special bond with her Springer Spaniel, Chloe. They do everything together and Chloe watches out for Dee. Only, there’s one time when Chloe’s not fast enough to stop Dee from getting burned. However, Chloe did raise the alarm with her barking. The two were separated as Dee had to be treated at the hospital for her burns. Chloe was not one to give up; she knew her girl needed her. She sniffed her way to the hospital, up the fire escape, and sat outside the window of her girl’s room. Chloe soon became legendary for her love for her girl: “What a dog, what a bond/ What a tale, Oh what love!”

Julie L. House’s picture book story, Chloe’s Heart Leads the Way, is a tender, compassionate story about a special bond between a little girl and her dog. Based on a true story, the plot begins by describing all the things Dee and Chloe do together, how they care for one another and soothe each other when needed. The tension builds as Dee, burned and needing extensive medical care, is separated from her beloved dog, but not for long. Chloe’s journey to find her girl is reminiscent of other great dog stories, like Lassie (Knight), Benji (Thomas), A Dog’s Journey (Cameron), A Dog’s Way Home (Cameron) and so many others. Cleverly told in rhyming verse and with sweet, colorful illustrations, this book would appeal to young readers and those learning to read. Beautiful and heartwarming.
