Chuchito is a heartfelt children’s picture book written by Milagros Wallace about her nephew, Carlos Jesús. Chuchito is unique as it is a bilingual children’s book, written in Spanish and English. Milagros tells us about the love she has for Chuchito since he was born, creating special pillowcases with beautiful birds on them. She reminisces about their shared hugs and kisses and the little quirks she fondly remembers. Chuchito was happiest when people came to visit and when he could explore the great world outside. Chuchito would sneak some food away for the dogs and obviously, he became their favorite human. Milagros remembers the heartbreak of being away from a loved one, but then the joy of returning. Her beautiful story of Chuchito’s life and all the joy and love he brought into the world is a wonderful homage to love and family.
I was deeply moved by Chuchito. Milagros Wallace has bared her soul and written an endearing and uplifting story about a mother’s love for her child. She conveys a genuinely positive and moving message in wonderful rhymes and expressions. I loved that she wrote a bilingual book, opening up the story to so many more readers. Milagros ends the book with an array of fun quizzes, making the book educational and entertaining. Megan Herzart designed the cover and illustrations. Her illustrations are gorgeous and exemplify the freedom Chuchito represents. The story feels like a graceful bird’s flight through the sky – something to be enjoyed, leaving you in awe. Chuchito is truly an amazing book about the love every child deserves to experience.
